Scholarships

The GCW offers its members the opportunity to apply for scholarships to support ongoing learning.

There are two scholarships of $300 Canadian each available to Individual members:

  • A.I. Scholarship
    (for Maritime members of GCW, which may be awarded elsewhere if there are no Maritime applicants - anonymous donor)

  • Winnifred Mooney Scholarship (Mooney was a longtime Secretary/Treasurer for the GCW)

We also offer a $600 scholarship dedicated to affiliate member Guilds:

  • Founders Fund Affiliate Guild Scholarship in the amount of $600.00 Canadian to offset the cost of conducting a local workshop. (in memory of Ethel Henderson, Mary Sandin, and Mary Black)

The Annual Deadline for all Scholarship submissions is October 31.

Eligibility and Application Requirements

Guidelines for Individual Members

  1. GCW scholarships are available to all active members, regardless of level of ability or of residency address.

  2. The applicant shall have been an individual member of the Guild of Canadian Weavers for at least two consecutive years immediately prior to the year of application. 

  3. Scholarships are awarded to support:

    • attending a class of a duration of at least two days, at a school, studio, guild, or online, OR

    • attending a conference at which the recipient takes a minimum of a one-day workshop.

    Any course proposed for a scholarship must entail weaving or be textile related and taught by an established teacher and/or a published author.

  4. Applications (including all support materials) must reach the Scholarship Coordinator by October 31 annually, for events already attended in that year or to be attended prior to the year end.

  5. Scholarships are granted once a year, at the beginning of November.

  6. Applicants may receive only one scholarship within three consecutive years.

  7. The scholarship recipient must write and submit a description of the experience for The GCW Bulletin, within six months of receiving the scholarship. Accompanying photos and any other documentation of the experience are encouraged. Email to the Bulletin Editor.

Steps to Apply

  1. Complete the Individual Scholarship Application Form by clicking the button below.

  2. Submit the following supporting materials by email.

  • A copy of the description of the selected two-day class, including instructor information, OR

  • A copy of the description of the conference title, date, location, etc., and the chosen workshop and instructor, AND

  • Proof of registration and a statement by the guild affirming the workshop took place. This is required upon completion of the activity and is the applicant’s responsibility to forward.

NOTE: Applicants may expect an email confirmation that their materials have been received. (A ‘read receipt’ from the email program is not adequate.) In other words, if you do not hear from us, please follow up.


Guidelines for the Founders Fund Affiliate Guild Scholarship

  1. This scholarship is available to all GCW affiliate member guilds, regardless of guild membership size.

  2. The applicant guild shall have been a member of the Guild of Canadian Weavers for at least two consecutive years immediately prior to the year of application.

  3. Scholarships are awarded to sponsor a workshop of at least two days. Any workshop proposed for a scholarship must entail weaving or be textile related, and taught by an established teacher and/or a published author.

  4. Applications (including all support materials) must reach the Scholarship Chair by October 31 annually, for events already attended in that year or to be attended prior to the year end.

  5. Scholarships are granted once a year, at the beginning of November.

  6. Applicants may receive only one scholarship within three consecutive years.
